NFHS wrestling weight classes for 2026-27
Most states use the national high school (NFHS) weight classes. The NFHS lets each state pick a 12, 13 or 14 class set, with separate sets for boys and girls (NFHS). The 14 class sets are the ones most states on this page use:
| # | Boys (lb) | Girls (lb) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 106 | 100 |
| 2 | 113 | 105 |
| 3 | 120 | 110 |
| 4 | 126 | 115 |
| 5 | 132 | 120 |
| 6 | 138 | 125 |
| 7 | 144 | 130 |
| 8 | 150 | 135 |
| 9 | 157 | 140 |
| 10 | 165 | 145 |
| 11 | 175 | 155 |
| 12 | 190 | 170 |

The 12 and 13 class sets, for boys and girls, are on our girls wrestling weight classes page and in the weight class finder.
How states differ
Your state association decides which set you wrestle, when the growth allowance starts and how weight certification works. That is why a list from another state can be wrong for you.
- Girls 12 classes: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin.
- Girls 13 classes: North Dakota, Pennsylvania.
- Girls 14 classes: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.
- Boys sets other than the NFHS 14: Idaho, North Dakota, Pennsylvania.
Growth allowance by state
A growth allowance adds pounds to every class later in the season. Each state sets the amount and the date. The states on this site that list one for 2026-27: Alabama (+2 lb from Dec 26, 2026); Alaska (+1 lb from Oct 26, 2026, +1 lb from Nov 30, 2026); Arkansas (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); California (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Colorado (+2 lb from Jan 2, 2027); Florida (+2 lb from Dec 26, 2026); Hawaii (+2 lb from Jan 3, 2027); Idaho (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Illinois (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); Iowa (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Kansas (+2 lb from Dec 28, 2026); Massachusetts (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Montana (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Nebraska (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); New Jersey (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); New Mexico (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); New York (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); North Carolina (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); North Dakota (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); Ohio (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); Oklahoma (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Rhode Island (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); South Carolina (+2 lb from Dec 26, 2026); South Dakota (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); Texas (+2 lb from Dec 27, 2026); Vermont (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026); Virginia (+1 lb from Dec 24, 2026, +1 lb from Jan 24, 2027); Washington (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027); Wisconsin (+2 lb from Dec 25, 2026, +1 lb from Mar 1, 2027); Wyoming (+2 lb from Jan 1, 2027). Maine splits its allowance between mid-December and mid-January. For the remaining states the handbook we checked does not list an allowance, so ask your coach.
Weight certification and the 2026-27 changes
Before you can wrestle a class, you pass a hydration test and a body fat test that set your lowest allowed weight. For 2026-27 the NFHS raised the minimum body fat for girls from 12% to 19% and added an option to weigh in by team (NFHS). Your state page shows how your state runs the test. You can work out your own number with the weight certification calculator and plan the drop with the descent plan calculator.
Is your state missing? We only publish a state once we have checked its 2026-27 handbook. More states are added as their associations post their rules.
