How weight classes work in New Mexico wrestling

New Mexico uses the standard NFHS 14-class weight divisions for both boys and girls in 2026-27. The NMAA sets the rules. Boys compete in classes from 106 through 285 pounds, while girls compete from 100 through 235 pounds.

Unlike states with custom girls divisions, New Mexico follows the NFHS girls class list. The NMAA wrestling weight management materials and wrestling bylaws describe the weight management system and divisions.

The NMAA bylaws also include an equivalence table for interstate events that use different class systems. If your team travels to compete against another state, ask your coach how the event’s divisions match New Mexico’s classes.

Your minimum wrestling weight controls which division you can enter. Do not choose a class based only on how much weight you think you could lose.

New Mexico growth allowance and weigh-in rules

New Mexico does not include growth allowance when calculating minimum wrestling weight. You must still be at or below the scratch weight allowed by your descent plan.

The NMAA assessment process includes a clothing and variance allowance.

Assessment adjustmentAmount
Clothing1 lb
Variance1 lb
Combined2 lb

These adjustments belong to the assessment process. They are not permission to lower your certified minimum wrestling weight.

New Mexico also recognizes a consecutive-day allowance, but the booklet does not state its amount. That allowance cannot be used to establish eligibility for a minimum weight class.

Rule check: Keep your certified minimum separate from any allowance used during assessment or competition. Ask your coach to confirm the event’s weigh-in procedures.

Weight certification in New Mexico

New Mexico requires a hydration test as part of weight certification. The maximum passing urine specific gravity is 1.025.

If you fail the hydration test, you must wait at least 24 hours before trying again.

Minimum body fat is 7% for boys and 19% for girls. These values help determine the minimum weight you can be certified to wrestle.

All descent plans lock on January 10, 2027. An appeal to extend a plan is available only for the heaviest classes, 235 pounds for girls and 285 pounds for boys. The appeal is not a general option for athletes in other divisions.

These limits and deadlines come from the NMAA Wrestling Weight Management Program booklet.

Planning your season in New Mexico

The January plan-lock date should guide your season planning. Do not assume you can change your target after that point.

Start by estimating your minimum with the weight certification calculator. Your official assessment remains the deciding result.

Next, check your target class using the descent plan calculator. Look at the full timeline rather than focusing only on the next tournament.

If the target does not fit before the plan locks, discuss staying at a higher class with your coach. The extension appeal is limited to the heaviest divisions, so most wrestlers should not plan around receiving one.

Safety: Drink water normally before the hydration test. Avoid dehydration or extreme short-term cuts. Your goal is to make weight while keeping enough energy for training and competition.

Keep your certification results and descent schedule available when discussing class changes with your coach. The official plan matters more than a weight you happen to reach on a particular morning.
