How weight classes work in South Carolina wrestling

South Carolina high school wrestling follows the NFHS rulebook. SCHSL says weight classes are those listed in that book, so boys use the standard 14-class NFHS lineup, from 106 to 285 pounds. The state’s wrestling section does not print a separate girls class set. If you wrestle in a girls event, ask your coach which weights are offered before choosing a goal. SCHSL also sets state-specific dates for growth allowance and reaching your minimum class. SCHSL rules

Choosing a class is about eligibility as well as your body weight. A listed class is not an invitation to cut down to it. Your assessment and season timing should guide the decision.

South Carolina growth allowance and weigh-in rules

SCHSL adds a 2-pound growth allowance on December 26, 2026. You cannot use that allowance to establish a minimum weight class. It can change the weight allowed at an eligible weigh-in, but it does not lower the minimum you were cleared to reach. The rules section does not list a separate consecutive-day allowance.

Rule check: Keep your certified minimum separate from the event weigh-in limit. Ask your coach to verify the correct weight when you compete around the growth allowance change.

Weight certification in South Carolina

SCHSL requires hydration testing with a refractometer, not a litmus test. If you fail hydration, you must wait at least 48 hours before retesting. The body fat standards are at least 7% for boys and 19% for girls, with a 2% margin of error. All wrestlers must be at their minimum weight class by January 30, 2027. The rules section does not print a specific urine gravity number or name a certifier. SCHSL rules

Take the hydration requirement seriously. Drink normally and let the assessment reflect your usual condition. Dehydrating yourself to influence the test is unsafe and defeats the purpose of checking whether a weight is suitable.

Planning your season in South Carolina

Work backward from the minimum-class deadline, not from the holiday allowance. If you are still unsure which class fits, review your assessment with your coach now. Do not assume a growth allowance can fix an overly ambitious target.

Use the weight certification calculator to understand the role of your assessment and the descent plan calculator to sketch a gradual route to a weigh-in. Give yourself room to eat well, hydrate, and recover after practice. If the plan starts affecting your energy or focus, speak up and adjust it with a responsible adult.

CutCoach can make a daily plan for calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale based on your weight, class, and weigh-in date. Keep SCHSL’s testing and minimum-weight rules as the final authority for whether you can wrestle in that class.
