How weight classes work in Nebraska wrestling

Nebraska high school wrestling uses the NFHS weight classes. NSAA tells host schools to use those classes, so boys compete in the standard 14-class set, from 106 to 285 pounds. The NSAA manual does not print a separate girls class list. If you are entering a girls event, confirm the weights with your coach or event host before selecting a class. The 2026-27 manual also has specific rules on testing, allowances, and the dates when wrestlers must establish their minimum weight. NSAA wrestling manual

An allowance can change the scale limit for an event, but it does not let you ignore your descent plan.

Nebraska growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Nebraska’s growth allowance begins December 25, 2026. Eligible wrestlers with a completed alpha test and descent plan receive 2 additional pounds. You cannot use the extra weight to wrestle below the lowest class in your plan. At districts, you must first have weighed in and competed at the class before using the allowance there.

NSAA’s manual also illustrates a 1-pound allowance for consecutive days of competition. Check with your coach about how that example applies to your meet.

Weight certification in Nebraska

NSAA alpha testing starts November 10, 2026. The hydration limit is a urine specific gravity of 1.025, and a failed hydration test requires waiting 24 hours before retesting. For girls, the minimum body fat level rises from 12% to 19%, with a 2% variance. The deadlines to establish minimum wrestling weight are January 30, 2027, for girls and February 6, 2027, for boys. These are deadlines for establishing minimum weight, not a universal date when every descent plan must stop. NSAA wrestling manual

Go to testing hydrated as you normally would be for practice. Trying to manipulate the result can leave you with a poor starting point for the rest of the season. Ask your coach who handles your alpha test and where you can review your approved plan.

Planning your season in Nebraska

Start talking about certification before alpha testing opens. Once your assessment is complete, check that your proposed class fits the plan and the district eligibility conditions. The weight certification calculator can help you prepare questions about your minimum. Use the descent plan calculator to explore a steady route toward your next weigh-in.

Do not build your routine around the holiday allowance alone. You still need to train, eat, drink, sleep, and recover while meeting the requirements of the assessment. Make sure you understand which deadline applies to your division. CutCoach can create a day-by-day plan for calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale from your weight, class, and weigh-in date, but your NSAA plan controls eligibility.
