How weight classes work in Wyoming wrestling

Wyoming recognizes 14 high school wrestling weight classes for boys and 14 for girls under the National Federation model. Boys compete from 106 to 285 lb, and girls compete from 100 to 235 lb, as confirmed by the WHSAA 2026 state wrestling information

The Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) publishes the state’s weight management rules. Its available program document is undated, and the confirmed class listings come from the 2025-26 season.

That means the class tables give you a useful starting point for 2026-27, but they are not confirmation that every policy remains unchanged.

Before settling on a target class, check that your certified minimum and approved descent schedule make you eligible.

Wyoming growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Wyoming’s available weight management program gives wrestlers a 2 lb growth allowance beginning January 1. Unlike states that prohibit this use, Wyoming permits the allowance to help a wrestler reach a lower weight class, according to the WHSAA Weight Management Program

That difference can affect your season plan. However, you should confirm the current policy before depending on an allowance to qualify for a class.

The 2026 state tournament information also lists an extra 1 lb on the second and third days of competition. The available record does not state a separate regular-season consecutive-day amount.

Do not automatically apply the state tournament allowance to an ordinary meet. Ask your coach which event rules are in effect.

Weight certification in Wyoming

The available WHSAA weight management document uses a hydration threshold of 1.025 and body fat minimums of 7% for boys and 12% for girls.

The program requires wrestlers to establish their certified minimum wrestling weight by the first day of the Regional Tournament. It does not specify a hydration retest waiting period in the handbook.

Certification topicPublished Wyoming policy
Hydration limit1.025
Boys body fat floor7%
Girls body fat floor12%
Minimum weight deadlineFirst day of Regional Tournament
Hydration retest waitNot stated

Rule check: The 12% girls body fat figure comes from an undated Wyoming document. Because the NFHS changed its girls standard for 2026-27, confirm the applicable current Wyoming standard with your coach before using that figure. See the NFHS rules change announcement

Your certification should guide your class choice, not the other way around. A lower class is only worth considering when the official assessment and applicable rules support it.

Planning your season in Wyoming

Begin by getting the current WHSAA assessment instructions from your coach. This is especially useful because the available program document does not carry a clear current-season date.

Use the weight certification calculator to explore a possible minimum weight, but rely on your official certification for eligibility.

Then use the descent plan calculator to plan toward the regional deadline. Ask your coach to check the effect of the growth allowance separately.

If you expect to wrestle at the state tournament, review the consecutive-day weigh-in rules ahead of time.

Safety: Keep drinking water normally, eat enough to train and recover, and avoid trying to force a lower weigh-in through dehydration.

CutCoach can build a day-by-day plan for calories, water, meals and refueling after the scale using your weight, weight class and weigh-in date.
