How weight classes work in Massachusetts wrestling
Massachusetts wrestling uses different class structures for mixed-gender competition and the girls All-State tournament.
Under the available MIAA tournament format, mixed-gender competition uses the standard 14 NFHS divisions, from 106 to 285 pounds. The girls All-State format uses a custom 12-class set, from 100 to 235 pounds. MIAA Tournament Format
This distinction matters when you review the weight class tables above. The girls All-State classes do not match the standard 14-class girls set used by some other states.
Rule check: The detailed rules come from earlier MIAA materials. They do not establish every requirement for 2026-27. Confirm the current season’s tournament format with your coach before selecting a class.
Your competition type determines which class list you should use. Do not assume the girls All-State list applies to every Massachusetts wrestling event.
Massachusetts growth allowance and weigh-in rules
The available MIAA weight control procedures describe a 2-pound growth allowance starting January 1.
However, wrestlers must first make scratch weight before using that allowance. Wrestlers who move up a weight class must take the allowance.
The procedures also require wrestlers to weigh in at base weight on at least 50% of their varsity competition days.
| Situation | Published MIAA procedure |
|---|---|
| January growth allowance | 2 pounds |
| Before using growth allowance | Make scratch weight |
| Varsity weigh-ins | Base weight on at least 50% of days |
| Second day of a two-day tournament | Additional 1 pound |
| Weather-cancelled practice | Additional 1 pound, up to 2 pounds maximum |
These details come from the older weight control document, not a confirmed 2026-27 revision. MIAA Weight Control Procedures
The base-weight requirement can affect your season planning. Making an adjusted limit at a later tournament does not replace the need to satisfy the underlying weigh-in requirement.
Ask your coach to review your competition records throughout the season.
Weight certification in Massachusetts
Massachusetts uses a Minimum Weight Control Certificate. The published process requires that certificate to be filed on FloArena.
The available weight control document was written for an earlier season and gives a December 12, 2024 certification deadline. That is a historical deadline, not a confirmed deadline for 2026-27.
Neither document establishes a numeric hydration USG limit, hydration retest waiting period, or descent-plan end date.
The handbooks also do not provide a current body fat floor that can be confidently applied to the 2026-27 season.
Do not fill these gaps with another state’s rules.
Ask your coach when your assessment must be completed, how your certificate will be recorded, and what minimum weight appears on your official documentation.
Safety: Avoid last-minute dehydration or drastic food restriction to make a class. Your certified limit should support consistent training and recovery.
Planning your season in Massachusetts
Start by confirming whether you will compete in mixed-gender divisions or the girls All-State format.
Then review your certificate and the weigh-in requirements with your coach.
The weight certification calculator can provide a planning estimate. Use the descent plan calculator to map gradual changes in weight.
Keep a record of the class you entered at each varsity weigh-in. That makes it easier to check whether your season meets the published base-weight requirement.
Do not build your plan around the January allowance until you have confirmed scratch-weight eligibility.
CutCoach can help you organize calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale into a day by day plan based on your class and weigh-in date.
Because the Massachusetts procedures are older, confirm current deadlines and allowances before relying on them.
