How weight classes work in New Hampshire wrestling
New Hampshire high school wrestling uses 14 boys weight classes and 12 girls weight classes for 2026-27. The NHIAA sets the rules. Boys follow the NFHS class list, running from 106 through 285 pounds. Girls use a separate 12-class list, from 100 through 235 pounds. The divisions are documented in the NHIAA 2026-27 Wrestling By-Law.
Girls should not rely on a generic NFHS weight class chart when choosing a division. New Hampshire’s listed classes are different.
Your goal is to find a class that matches your certified weight and allows you to compete at your best. Choosing a lower class is not useful if reaching it leaves you too tired to train well.
New Hampshire growth allowance and weigh-in rules
The available NHIAA wrestling by-law does not list a growth allowance amount or effective date. It also does not describe an additional allowance for wrestling on consecutive days.
That does not prove the allowances are unavailable. The separate Wrestling Policy & Procedures Manual may contain details that are missing from the by-law. The manual was marked “Coming soon” when the handbooks we checked were checked.
| Weigh-in topic | What the available by-law confirms |
|---|---|
| Boys weight classes | NFHS 14-class list |
| Girls weight classes | Separate 12-class list |
| Growth allowance | Not specified |
| Consecutive-day allowance | Not specified |
| Hydration limit | Not specified |
Before a tournament, ask your coach which weigh-in procedures apply. This matters when you compete at events with different schedules.
Rule check: Do not assume an allowance used in another state applies in New Hampshire. Use the current NHIAA procedures for your event.
Weight certification in New Hampshire
The NHIAA by-law requires body fat measurement by a medical professional before your first meet.
The document lists minimum body fat levels of 7% for boys and 12% for girls. However, the NFHS changed its female minimum to 19% for 2026-27. The New Hampshire by-law still contains the older female percentage.
This is a rule difference you should resolve before planning a girls weight class. The NFHS rule change explains the new national standard. Ask your coach which percentage NHIAA is applying for the season.
The by-law does not specify a urine specific gravity limit or a hydration retest waiting period. Do not interpret that missing information as permission to skip hydration testing.
Scratch weights must be certified no later than the second Saturday in January, which falls on January 9, 2027, according to the NHIAA wrestling rules.
Planning your season in New Hampshire
Work backward from the January scratch-weight certification deadline. You need enough time for your assessment and for any gradual weight changes your coach approves.
Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum wrestling weight. Treat the result as a planning estimate until your official assessment is complete.
The descent plan calculator can help you compare target classes and possible timelines. Confirm any state-specific requirements with your coach.
Girls should clarify the body fat percentage used for certification before building a plan. That decision can change which class is realistic.
Safety: Do not dehydrate yourself to pass an assessment or make a weigh-in. Eat regular meals, drink water normally, and protect your recovery.
If you are unsure about an allowance or certification procedure, get an answer from your school before changing your target weight. The missing details in the available by-law are not a reason to guess.
