How weight classes work in Ohio wrestling
Ohio high school wrestling uses 14 boys weight classes and 14 girls weight classes for the 2026-27 season. The OHSAA oversees the rules, and both lists follow the NFHS divisions.
Boys classes run from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls classes run from 100 to 235 pounds. Ohio also allows an additional 98-pound class for freshman-only events. The divisions are listed in the OHSAA Wrestling Regulations.
The freshman-only class is not part of the regular boys varsity division list. Check which divisions your particular event offers.
Ohio’s weight management rules make your official descent plan especially important. Reaching a number on the scale does not necessarily mean you remain eligible for that division.
Ohio growth allowance and weigh-in rules
Ohio allows growth allowance only in a weight class where you are already certified. You must compete at scratch weight in that class before using the allowance. It cannot lower your certified minimum.
The regulations also give specific minimum weights for the heaviest divisions.
| Division | Listed minimum | With allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Boys 285 lb | 210 lb | 212 lb |
| Girls 235 lb | 184 lb | 186 lb |
The boys heavier-class minimum increases after December 25.
Ohio also has a weight-class descent restriction. If you compete more than one class above the class allowed by that day’s weight loss plan, you forfeit eligibility for that class and lower classes.
This means your decision to wrestle up can affect your options later. Discuss any class change with your coach before entering the lineup.
The regulations do not confirm the amount of a consecutive-day allowance.
Weight certification in Ohio
Ohio uses urine specific gravity to check hydration before the body composition assessment.
A reading of 1.025 or lower passes. Readings of 1.026 or higher fail. After a failed assessment, you must wait at least 48 hours before reassessment.
Minimum body fat is 7% for boys and 19% for girls for 2026-27.
These requirements appear in the OHSAA wrestling and assessment regulations.
The documents do not identify a confirmed final descent-plan date. Ask your coach about the applicable certification and scheduling deadlines.
Rule check: Your certified class, your current weight loss plan class, and the class you actually wrestle are connected. Do not assume you can move between them without consequences.
Planning your season in Ohio
Start by working out which class your official certification allows. Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum before assessment.
Then use the descent plan calculator to explore a gradual schedule. Keep your coach informed if your preferred class changes.
Ohio’s scratch-weight requirement matters when planning around growth allowance. You cannot simply count on the allowance to reach a division you have not qualified for.
The restriction on wrestling above your plan’s class also makes lineup decisions important. Ask what a proposed class change would mean for future eligibility.
Safety: Do not try to pass hydration testing by manipulating your water intake. Eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, and focus on recovering between practices.
If moving down would leave you struggling to train, a higher division may be the better choice. Choose a weight that works with your certified plan and your performance.
