How weight classes work in North Dakota wrestling

North Dakota high school wrestling uses its own set of weight classes rather than the standard 14-class NFHS lists. The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) has 13 boys classes and 13 girls classes for the published wrestling regulations.

Boys compete from 107 to 285 pounds, while girls compete from 100 to 250 pounds. NDHSAA Wrestling Regulations

Some class limits are different from those used in neighboring states. This matters when you compare tournament schedules, look at online calculators or discuss weight classes with wrestlers elsewhere.

For example, North Dakota boys have a 107-pound class, and the girls list ends at 250 pounds.

Always use the North Dakota class list when setting your goal.

North Dakota growth allowance and weigh-in rules

NDHSAA allows a 2-pound growth allowance beginning December 25.

North Dakota also recognizes a consecutive-day allowance. Under that procedure, a wrestler reverts to the first day’s descent weight.

The regulations do not state an exact pound amount for this allowance.

Rule check: The consecutive-day provision should not be treated as permission to enter a class below your certified eligibility. Confirm the applicable limit with your coach before competition.

Weight certification in North Dakota

North Dakota requires a hydration assessment with urine specific gravity no greater than 1.025.

Approved methods include a urine color chart, dipstick or refractometer. If you do not pass, you must wait 24 hours before retesting.

The weight management process includes a 2% variance in calculating minimum weight.

The girls regulations use a 19% minimum body fat standard. The boys regulations use 7% for males but also contain an older reference to 12% for females. The girls regulations should be checked for the current girls requirement.

There are some document date issues worth knowing. The published girls regulations still carry a 2025-26 heading even though they were updated in September 2026. The boys regulations carry a 2026-27 heading but retain an older update date. NDHSAA Wrestling Regulations

Wrestlers have until the Individual Region Tournament to reach their lowest eligible weight class.

The regulations do not list a clear statewide initial assessment window or weekly descent percentage in these details. Ask your coach for the current certification schedule and applicable descent procedure.

Planning your season in North Dakota

Begin by checking North Dakota’s class limits instead of relying on a generic national wrestling chart.

Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum weight, then compare that estimate with the NDHSAA divisions.

The descent plan calculator can help organize a gradual plan, but you should confirm the applicable descent rules with your coach.

Because your lowest eligible class must be reached by the Individual Region Tournament, plan around that event rather than expecting to change classes at the last moment.

Keep a record of your official assessment and eligibility information. If a class looks possible only through an allowance, get the rules checked before depending on it.

Safety: Stay normally hydrated before assessment and competition. Trying to lose water rapidly can hurt your health and performance.
