How weight classes work in Idaho wrestling
Idaho high school wrestling has a different boys weight class structure from most states. IHSAA uses 15 boys classes, including an extra 98-pound division, while girls compete in the standard 14 NFHS divisions. The remaining boys classes match the NFHS set. IHSAA Wrestling Sport Sheet
That extra boys division matters when you choose your target weight. The 98-pound class gives eligible lighter wrestlers another competition option, but having the class available does not automatically mean you can certify for it.
| Division | Idaho class structure |
|---|---|
| Boys | 15 classes, including 98 pounds |
| Girls | 14 NFHS classes |
| Boys’ highest class | 285 pounds |
| Girls’ highest class | 235 pounds |
Your certification result determines which class you are allowed to reach. Check that result before building your season plan.
Idaho growth allowance and weigh-in rules
Idaho’s growth allowance begins January 1, adding 2 pounds to the regular class limits. However, you cannot use those extra pounds to make scratch weight.
Scratch weight means the original class limit before the allowance is applied. If you are trying to establish eligibility for a lower class, do not count on the January allowance to replace your certification requirements.
This creates an important difference between qualifying for a class and making weight at a later competition.
The IHSAA sport sheet does not specify an additional consecutive-day allowance or explain how multiple weigh-ins affect class eligibility.
Before a tournament with weigh-ins on different days, ask your coach which weight limits will be used. Do not assume another state’s consecutive-day rules apply in Idaho.
Weight certification in Idaho
Idaho’s certification process includes body composition testing and hydration screening.
The body fat minimums are 7% for boys and 19% for girls. Body composition is measured using bioimpedance. The maximum permitted weight loss rate is 1.5% per week.
Hydration testing is required, and the IHSAA sheet identifies refractometers and urine strips as testing methods. However, it does not provide a numeric USG pass limit.
The certification window starts October 19 and runs through the day before the first permitted competition, which is December 2. Wrestlers have two certification attempts. IHSAA Wrestling Sport Sheet
The sheet does not state a specific hydration retest waiting period or descent-plan end date.
Safety: Do not try to change a hydration reading by withholding fluids. Follow normal hydration habits and get guidance from your coach if you do not pass.
Your official assessment is more important than an estimate from a calculator.
Planning your season in Idaho
Idaho wrestlers should begin planning before the certification window closes.
First, identify your preferred class from the Idaho tables. Next, compare that target with your measured body composition and official certification result.
The weight certification calculator can help you estimate a possible minimum weight. Use the descent plan calculator to organize your season around a gradual approach.
A practical Idaho checklist:
- Get your assessment completed within the certification window.
- Do not confuse the extra 98-pound division with automatic eligibility.
- Respect your certified minimum weight.
- Treat the January allowance as a competition allowance, not a way around scratch weight.
- Ask about weigh-in procedures before traveling to tournaments.
Eat enough to support practices and recovery. A weight class that leaves you exhausted or unable to train well may not be the right choice.
CutCoach can create a day by day plan for meals, calories, water, and refueling after the scale based on your weight, class, and weigh-in date.
Rule check: Confirm hydration testing procedures and tournament allowances with your coach because the sport sheet leaves those details open.
