How weight classes work in Alabama wrestling
Alabama high school wrestling follows the AHSAA weight-class structure for the 2026-27 season. Boys have 14 weight classes, ranging from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls have 12 classes, ranging from 100 to 235 pounds.
The boys’ divisions use the standard NFHS class list. The girls’ divisions use the 12-class set published for Alabama.
The AHSAA 2026-27 Wrestling Sports Book also explains Alabama’s Minimum Weight Program, which determines whether you are eligible for a particular class.
Your preferred weight class and your certified minimum are not always the same. You might want to wrestle at a lower class, but your assessment and approved weight-loss schedule decide when that class becomes available.
Alabama growth allowance and weigh-in rules
Alabama has an important allowance rule for wrestlers near their minimum weight class.
A growth allowance may be used when determining eligibility for a minimum weight class after December 25. For example, a wrestler with a minimum wrestling weight between 106.1 and 108 pounds may become eligible for the 106-pound class under that allowance.
This is different from simply checking the number displayed on the scale. It can affect which class your certification permits you to enter.
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Early-season competition | Your certified class eligibility |
| After December 25 | Whether growth allowance changes class eligibility |
| Multiple weigh-ins | Your event’s applicable weigh-in instructions |
| Consecutive competition days | Any additional allowance confirmed by your coach |
The AHSAA sports book does not explicitly provide a consecutive-day allowance amount or a complete consecutive-day procedure in the rules.
Rule check: Never treat a growth allowance as permission to ignore your certification record. Verify your eligibility through the approved system before entering a class.
Weight certification in Alabama
Alabama uses a hydration and body-composition assessment to establish your minimum wrestling weight.
Your urine specific gravity must be 1.025 or lower to pass the hydration screening. If you fail, you must rehydrate and wait at least 48 hours before retesting.
The body-fat minimum is 7% for boys and 19% for girls. The program also limits weight descent to 1.5% per week through the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator, known as OPC.
The alpha date is Saturday, October 3. The BIA assessment window runs from June 1, 2026, through January 8, 2027. That January date is an assessment deadline, not an explicitly stated descent-plan ending date.
The AHSAA minimum weight rules govern the certification process and its permitted weight changes.
Passing hydration is the starting point. Do not try to manipulate a test result by restricting water beforehand.
Planning your season in Alabama
If you want to move into a lower weight class, begin with your alpha assessment rather than choosing a goal from the class chart alone.
Use this sequence:
- Complete your hydration and body-composition assessment.
- Review the minimum weight and weekly descent schedule in OPC.
- Choose a class that fits your approved progression.
- Recheck eligibility when the December growth allowance becomes relevant.
- Complete any required assessment before the January deadline.
The weight certification calculator can estimate the relationship between body fat and minimum weight. The descent plan calculator can show how a weekly limit affects a target class.
These are planning aids, not replacements for your official AHSAA record.
Keep meals consistent and recover properly after training. A class that requires repeated extreme cuts is a poor target, even when it looks attractive on paper.
