How weight classes work in New York wrestling

New York does not use the standard NFHS boys class list without changes. NYSPHSAA prints its own boys lineup, with 14 classes running from 103 to 285 pounds. Its girls division has a different set of 15 classes, from 95 to 235 pounds. Look at the boys or girls table above before you choose a target. In New York, using the wrong chart can send you toward a weight that is not even offered in your division. NYSPHSAA handbook

Some boys classes have minimum entry weights. The 103 class requires more than 95 pounds, 110 requires more than 100, 215 requires more than 180, and 285 requires more than 210. Your approved minimum weight keeps your choice realistic.

New York growth allowance and weigh-in rules

NYSPHSAA adds a 2-pound growth allowance to each class on December 25. For qualifying consecutive competition days, the second day can add 1 pound, with a maximum allowance of 2 pounds and a 48-hour notice requirement. The state also waives the usual NFHS extra pound following a Sunday or holiday. Girls use the applicable NFHS weight and Christmas allowance rules, so verify your event details with the coach.

Rule check: Keep seasonal growth separate from any event-day allowance. Do not add amounts together without checking what the meet actually permits.

Weight certification in New York

A NYSPHSAA-approved assessor certifies wrestlers within 14 days of the first day of the season at centralized assessment sites. The process uses an InBody scale and hydration checks by refractometer only. The handbook does not print a urine specific gravity cutoff or a retest waiting period. The minimum body fat figures are 7% for boys and 19% for girls. NYSPHSAA waives the 1.5% weight-loss plan for girls, whose competition uses USA Freestyle Junior rules. NYSPHSAA handbook

Do not confuse a body fat threshold with a recommended target. The purpose of certification is to set limits, not to push everyone toward the lowest possible weight. Ask for your assessment result and make sure you understand the class it allows.

Planning your season in New York

Begin with the correct division chart and an early assessment appointment. Before committing to a class, ask your coach whether any minimum entry weight affects you, especially at the edges of the boys lineup. Use the weight certification calculator to prepare for your certified minimum and the descent plan calculator to compare gradual options.

Plan normal meals and hydration around school and workouts, then treat allowances as event rules rather than a reason to make a more aggressive cut. CutCoach builds daily calories, water, meals, and post-scale refueling from your weight, class, and weigh-in date. Check its plan against NYSPHSAA eligibility before competing.
