How weight classes work in North Carolina wrestling
North Carolina high school wrestling uses 14 boys weight classes and 12 girls weight classes for the 2026-27 season. The NCHSAA sets the rules. Boys follow the standard NFHS classes, from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls use a custom North Carolina set, from 100 to 235 pounds, rather than the standard NFHS girls classes. These are the divisions listed in the NCHSAA 2026-27 Handbook.
That difference matters when you look at a national weight class chart. A girls class used in another state may not exist in North Carolina. Use the NCHSAA list above when choosing your target.
Your actual eligible class also depends on your certified minimum wrestling weight and descent plan. Being close to a class limit does not automatically make you eligible to wrestle there.
North Carolina growth allowance and weigh-in rules
North Carolina allows growth allowances, but they cannot lower your certified minimum wrestling weight. Your minimum remains the floor, even when an allowance changes the weight you can make at a weigh-in.
The provided handbook notes do not give a confirmed growth allowance date or amount. They also do not specify a consecutive-day allowance. Ask your coach which allowances apply to your upcoming event.
Do not confuse a weigh-in allowance with permission to move down another class. The allowance may help you qualify for an event in a class you are already eligible to enter. It does not change your minimum weight.
Rule check: If your target class is below your certified minimum, a growth allowance does not solve that problem. Review your certification before making plans around an extra allowance.
Weight certification in North Carolina
NCHSAA weight management testing begins October 19, 2026. The hydration test comes before the body composition assessment.
The handbook describes these hydration results:
| Urine specific gravity | Result |
|---|---|
| Below 1.025 | Pass |
| Exactly 1.025 | Wording is unclear |
| Above 1.025 | Fail |
| 1.025 to 1.030 on trial 3 | Assessed, but moved up one class |
| Above 1.030 on trial 3 | Ineligible for the season |
After a failed test, the next attempt must be at least 24 hours later and no more than 72 hours later. The process allows 3 trials.
Minimum body fat is 7% for boys and 19% for girls. The NWCA system applies a 3% error allowance. This is part of the assessment process, not permission to ignore your certified minimum.
Weight-class certification must be completed by January 28, 2027. Your descent plan stays in effect through the individual regionals. These requirements are described in the NCHSAA wrestling handbook.
Planning your season in North Carolina
Start with your assessment rather than picking the lowest class you think you can reach. Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum from your weight and body fat.
Then use the descent plan calculator to see how your target class fits your schedule.
Plan around the January certification deadline, but remember that your descent plan continues into individual regionals. Do not assume you can change classes freely once certification closes.
Safety: Stay normally hydrated before testing. Avoid extreme weight cuts or trying to manipulate the hydration result. Eat enough to support practice, recovery, and school.
If your descent plan does not reach your target in time, discuss a higher class with your coach. A sustainable season is better than forcing a number on the scale.
