How weight classes work in Georgia wrestling
Georgia high school wrestling follows GHSA rules for the 2026-27 season. Boys and girls each use 14 weight classes under the standard NFHS structure.
Boys compete in classes from 106 through 285 pounds. Girls compete from 100 through 235 pounds, including the 105, 110, 115, 125, and 130-pound divisions.
These classes apply to GHSA school wrestling. Georgia’s independent-school association, GIAA, has separate rules, so do not assume the same procedures cover every school in the state.
The GHSA 2026-27 Weight Management Handbook provides the certification and descent-plan requirements for GHSA wrestlers.
Your class choice must fit both your official minimum weight and your approved descent schedule.
Georgia growth allowance and weigh-in rules
The GHSA handbook includes a growth-allowance section, but the available text does not confirm the effective date or pound amount.
Because of that, you should verify the current allowance with your coach rather than using a date from another state’s schedule.
Georgia’s consecutive-day rules are more clearly described in the referenced GHSA constitution material.
The rule provides an additional pound per day, up to a maximum of 2 pounds, when the opponent receives 48 hours’ notice. The allowance is not permitted the day before a postseason event.
| Allowance or requirement | Available GHSA guidance |
|---|---|
| Growth allowance | Date and amount not confirmed |
| Consecutive-day allowance | +1 lb per day |
| Consecutive-day maximum | 2 lb |
| Opponent notification | 48 hours |
| Day before postseason event | Consecutive-day allowance not permitted |
The consecutive-day provisions appear in the earlier constitution material. Confirm their application under the 2026-27 GHSA wrestling constitution before relying on them.
Rule check: A tournament allowance is not a substitute for meeting your certified minimum-weight requirements.
Weight certification in Georgia
Georgia uses hydration screening and body-fat assessment to establish a wrestler’s minimum weight.
A urine specific gravity of 1.025 or lower passes the hydration test. If you fail, you must wait at least 48 hours before retesting.
The minimum body-fat values are 7% for boys and 19% for girls.
The girls’ minimum reflects the NFHS rule change for female wrestlers.
Georgia’s descent-plan ending date is Saturday, January 30, 2027.
Be careful when reading older references or summary text. A point of emphasis in the handbook contains a year typo that says January 30, 2026. The stated 2026-27 season ending date is January 30, 2027.
You should use your official certification record to determine when a lower class becomes available, not just your current weight.
Planning your season in Georgia
Georgia’s January descent deadline gives you a clear point to work backward from.
Get your hydration and body-fat assessment completed, then review your approved minimum weight with your coach. Compare the available classes with the date your descent plan makes each one possible.
Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum and the descent plan calculator to explore how a target class fits your calendar.
Before entering a tournament, confirm any consecutive-day allowance and whether the event is affected by postseason restrictions.
CutCoach can build a day-by-day plan covering calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale from your weight, target class, and weigh-in date. It does not replace GHSA certification.
Safety: Eat enough to train and recover, drink water normally, and avoid aggressive last-minute cuts. Your goal should be a sustainable competition weight.
