How weight classes work in Montana wrestling

Montana high school wrestling has an important class change for 2026-27.

The MHSA handbook for the new season states that Montana follows the standard 14 NFHS boys weight classes and 14 NFHS girls weight classes. The boys divisions now run from 106 to 285 pounds, and the girls divisions run from 100 to 235 pounds. MHSA 2026-27 Handbook

Older Montana class charts may look different. The previous handbook used custom boys divisions, including a 103-pound class. That older boys structure should not be used as the 2026-27 class list.

This means you should check the season attached to any chart you find online.

Montana also differs from many states in how it handles minimum weight certification. Its older detailed procedures use physician certification rather than the usual mandatory hydration and body fat testing model.

Montana growth allowance and weigh-in rules

The detailed MHSA procedures, from 2025-26, describe several allowances that should not be confused with one another.

The regular growth allowance is 2 pounds beginning January 1. It also applies to the maximum limits of the heaviest boys and girls divisions.

A separate 2-pound allowance applies to regular-season matches held on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. The combined limit is capped at 4 pounds above the original class weight. MHSA 2025-26 Handbook

SituationPublished allowance
January growth allowance2 pounds
Regular-season Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday matchSeparate 2 pounds
Maximum combined increase4 pounds over original weight
Consecutive-day allowanceNot separately specified

These are different from the usual consecutive-day allowance rules found elsewhere.

The earlier handbook also includes a 50% requirement: at least half of your weigh-ins must be at your postseason weight, tracked through the NWCA portal.

Because these details come from the previous season’s handbook, confirm their continued application with your coach.

Weight certification in Montana

Montana’s published weight management model does not require a hydration and body fat certification program.

Instead, a physician establishes the wrestler’s minimum weight using the WR#1 form. Skinfold testing is recommended but is not the required basis for certification.

Under the older procedures, certification must happen within 34 days of first practice. The previously published deadline was December 23, 2025, which is not a confirmed deadline for 2026-27.

Once certified, a wrestler cannot recertify at a lower weight. The older rules also state that weighing in at least two classes above the WR#1 class removes eligibility for the lowest certified class.

No hydration USG cutoff or hydration retest waiting period is provided, because the system does not use a mandatory hydration testing program.

Safety: Do not try to reach a lower class through rapid dehydration. Your physician-established minimum is a safety limit, not a target to push below.

Ask your coach which physician certification procedure and deadline apply this season.

Planning your season in Montana

Begin by checking the updated 2026-27 class tables rather than an older custom boys chart.

Next, obtain your official physician-certified minimum and review your intended postseason weight.

The weight certification calculator may help you explore body composition, but it cannot replace Montana’s physician certification.

Use the descent plan calculator to organize a gradual plan while respecting your approved minimum.

Keep your weigh-in records accurate. If the previously published participation and class eligibility rules still apply, those records will affect where you may compete later.

Do not plan to correct an overly aggressive class choice by seeking a lower recertification.

CutCoach can organize daily calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale around your weight, class, and weigh-in date.

Rule check: The class list is updated for 2026-27, but the detailed certification and allowance information on this page comes from the prior handbook. Confirm those procedures before the season.
