How weight classes work in South Dakota wrestling

South Dakota’s SDHSAA weight management program lists 14 boys wrestling weight classes, from 106 to 285 lb, and 14 girls classes, from 100 to 235 lb. Both follow the NFHS 14-class model introduced for the 2025-26 season, according to the SDHSAA Wrestling Weight Management Program

The published document is undated and does not independently confirm a 2026-27 update. The class tables on this page reflect that available policy, so check with your coach before treating them as final for the new season.

Choosing a class takes more than finding the closest number to your current weight. Your certified minimum determines how low you can compete, and your descent schedule determines when you can reach that class.

South Dakota growth allowance and weigh-in rules

South Dakota has a useful difference from states that restrict how growth allowances affect class eligibility. The SDHSAA program provides a 2 lb growth allowance beginning December 25 and allows it to be used to reach a lower weight class, according to the SDHSAA program

That creates a planning option, but it should not be the only reason you target a lower class. Your coach still needs to verify your eligibility using your actual certification information.

The program also mentions consecutive-day allowances without specifying the amount. Do not assume that the same allowance used in another state applies in South Dakota.

Ask your coach to confirm the current competition rules whenever meets take place on consecutive days.

Weight certification in South Dakota

South Dakota uses a hydration test before completing the weight assessment. The program calls for a refractometer reading of 1.0250 or less.

If your first sample does not pass, the tester may check that same specimen again. If it still fails, the program requires a wait of at least 24 hours before another test.

The published body fat minimums are 7% for boys and 19% for girls. The certified minimum wrestling weight must be reached by the first day of the Regional Tournament.

These requirements make the early assessment useful. Instead of guessing how much you can lose, you can work from the minimum your assessment establishes.

Rule check: The available document does not give a separate 2026-27 regional date. Your coach should confirm the tournament calendar and any updated certification instructions.

Planning your season in South Dakota

Build your plan around certification and the regional deadline. A goal that looks reasonable at the start of the season might not fit your approved schedule.

Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum class. Then use the descent plan calculator to see how your lowest permitted weight could change over time.

Pay special attention to the holiday growth allowance. Check whether it changes your actual class eligibility before changing your training or eating plan.

Safety: Hydrate normally before testing. Do not try to manipulate a urine reading by restricting water or rapidly changing your fluid intake.

A consistent eating routine and enough recovery time make more sense than a last-minute attempt to reach a class.
