How weight classes work in Texas wrestling
Texas UIL high school wrestling uses 14 weight classes for boys and 14 for girls in the 2026-27 season. Boys classes range from 106 to 285 lb, and girls classes range from 100 to 235 lb. Both follow the NFHS 14-class model in the UIL regular-season wrestling manual
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) governs the competitions covered by these rules. Private schools competing under TAPPS follow a separate system, which is not covered on this page.
Before choosing a class, make sure you are looking at the right association. A UIL class list should not automatically be used for TAPPS competition.
Your certified minimum matters as much as the class limits. Even if you can make a lower weight on a particular day, that does not mean you are eligible to compete there.
Texas growth allowance and weigh-in rules
The UIL provides a 2 lb growth allowance beginning December 27, but that allowance cannot take a wrestler below their certified minimum class, according to the 2026-27 UIL wrestling manual
This restriction is easy to misunderstand. The allowance adjusts the applicable weight limit. It is not permission to enter a class below the one allowed by certification.
| Weigh-in question | Texas UIL rule |
|---|---|
| Growth allowance | 2 lb |
| Effective date | December 27 |
| Can lower certified minimum class | No |
| Consecutive-day allowance | Not listed in manual |
If you have a meet near the allowance date, ask your coach which limit applies. Avoid planning around a higher allowable weigh-in weight until your team has checked the rules.
The manual page does not give a consecutive-day allowance amount. Your coach can confirm whether additional provisions apply to your event.
Weight certification in Texas
Texas UIL requires wrestlers to meet a hydration standard as part of the assessment process. A urine specific gravity reading above 1.025 fails the test, and reassessment cannot take place for 24 hours.
The current regular-season page does not confirm a specific certification testing window, descent plan end date or body fat minimum.
Older UIL material references body fat standards and a testing start date. Because those details were not verified in the 2026-27 page, you should not use them as confirmed current requirements.
| Certification question | Available 2026-27 information |
|---|---|
| Hydration pass limit | 1.025 |
| Failed-test reassessment wait | 24 hours |
| Body fat floor | Not confirmed in current page |
| Assessment opening date | Not listed |
| Descent plan deadline | Not listed |
Rule check: Ask your coach which current UIL certification instructions your school uses, particularly for details not printed on the regular-season page.
The hydration test measures whether you meet the required hydration standard. It is not something to prepare for by intentionally dehydrating yourself.
Planning your season in Texas
Start by finding out when your school completes weight assessments. Get your certified result before deciding that a lower class is realistic.
The weight certification calculator can help you understand how estimated minimum weights work. Use your official assessment for actual competition eligibility.
Next, try the descent plan calculator to explore how your target class fits your available time.
If your target is close to your minimum, discuss the December allowance with your coach. Remember that this adjustment does not override your certified minimum class.
Safety: Keep eating regular meals and drinking water throughout training. If making weight leaves you weak or unable to recover, reconsider the class with your coach.
CutCoach also builds a day-by-day plan covering calories, water, meals and refueling after weigh-in based on your weight, class and weigh-in date.
