How weight classes work in Colorado wrestling
Colorado high school wrestling uses CHSAA rules for the 2026-27 season. Boys and girls each have 14 weight classes.
The boys’ classes run from 106 to 285 pounds. The girls’ classes run from 100 to 235 pounds, with divisions including 105, 110, 115, 125, and 130 pounds.
Colorado uses the standard NFHS class structures for both divisions. That makes the class list familiar, but certification still controls your eligibility to move down.
The CHSAA 2026-27 Wrestling Bulletin provides Colorado’s weight-management requirements, including hydration, body fat, and weigh-in allowances.
Colorado growth allowance and weigh-in rules
Colorado’s growth allowance begins on or after January 2. It adds 2 pounds to the applicable weight-class limits.
CHSAA also addresses consecutive days of competition. An additional pound may be allowed per day, up to a maximum of 2 pounds, when the required conditions are met.
The opponent must receive 48 hours’ notice for the consecutive-day allowance.
| Allowance | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Growth allowance | +2 lb | On or after January 2 |
| Consecutive-day allowance | +1 lb per day | Consecutive competition days |
| Consecutive-day maximum | 2 lb | Subject to notice requirements |
| Opponent notice | 48 hours | Required for consecutive-day allowance |
These rules have different purposes. The growth allowance changes the class limit during the season. The consecutive-day provision deals with repeated competition days.
Do not assume that every allowance applies automatically to your tournament.
Rule check: Have your coach verify the event schedule and notification requirements before you rely on an adjusted weight limit.
Weight certification in Colorado
Colorado uses the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator for its required weight-management program.
You must pass hydration screening with a urine specific gravity of 1.025 or lower.
The minimum body-fat values are 7% for boys and 19% for girls. The girls’ requirement also matches the updated NFHS minimum body-fat rule.
Your assessment feeds into an approved descent plan that determines when you can reach a lower weight class.
One Colorado-specific point deserves attention: a physician cannot change your descent plan. Do not assume a medical note can override the progression established through the required system.
The bulletin does not state a hydration retest waiting period, a final descent-plan date, or a general assessment deadline.
Check with your coach if you need those details for your school or event.
Planning your season in Colorado
Start with certification, then choose your target class based on your approved progression.
Use the weight certification calculator to understand how body composition can affect your minimum weight. The descent plan calculator can help you picture when a target might become realistic.
When January approaches, review the growth allowance with your coach. For tournaments held on consecutive days, check whether the necessary opponent notification has been completed.
Build your plan around regular meals, hydration, and recovery. Keep enough energy for both practices and matches.
CutCoach can also build a day-by-day plan for calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale using your weight, weight class, and weigh-in date. Your official CHSAA certification remains the authority for eligibility.
Safety: Never use dehydration methods to force a weigh-in. A class that supports steady training is a better choice than one you can reach only through an extreme cut.
