How weight classes work in Oklahoma wrestling

Oklahoma high school wrestling uses 14 boys weight classes and 14 girls weight classes in 2026-27. The OSSAA oversees competition and weight certification.

Boys follow the NFHS divisions from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls follow the NFHS divisions from 100 to 235 pounds. The official classes appear on the OSSAA 2026-27 weigh-in forms.

Oklahoma also has a rule that makes your certified minimum class especially important. After certification, you may weigh in only one class above that minimum. Moving two classes above it permanently raises your minimum class.

That makes class selection more than a decision about the next match. Ask your coach before moving up, even when you could comfortably wrestle at a heavier weight.

Oklahoma growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Oklahoma’s growth allowance begins January 1 for wrestlers in grades 9 through 12. The handbooks we checked do not confirm the amount.

The consecutive-day allowance is 1 pound per day, up to 2 pounds. It does not count toward certification of a minimum weight class.

A competition allowance and a certified minimum are different things. Being allowed additional weight at a weigh-in does not mean your minimum class changes.

Rule check: If you are considering wrestling above your certified class, confirm the effect with your coach first. Oklahoma’s rule can permanently change which lower classes remain available to you.

Weight certification in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s certification schedule has several deadlines that athletes should track.

DateCertification event
November 19, 2026Season opens and certification window begins
January 1, 2027Growth allowance begins
January 16, 2027Deadline to certify minimum weight
After January 24, 2027Late certification requires OSSAA approval
January 27, 2027Certified minimum weight list due to OSSAA

The dates are documented in the OSSAA 2026-27 certification materials.

The available 2025-26 OSSAA manual sets the hydration passing limit at 1.025 urine specific gravity and requires a 24-hour wait after failure. The 2026-27 manual was not available in the handbooks we checked, so confirm those procedures before testing.

The 2026-27 materials also include the NFHS change raising the female minimum body fat percentage to 19%.

Planning your season in Oklahoma

The January certification deadline should shape your training plan from the start. Do not leave assessment or class selection until the end of the window.

Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum. Follow that with the descent plan calculator to see how your goal fits the season.

Once certified, be careful about competing above your minimum class. A lineup change can affect your eligibility later, even if you plan to return to a lighter division.

If certification cannot be completed on schedule, ask your coach about OSSAA approval requirements. Do not assume late certification will be granted.

Safety: Stay hydrated and maintain regular meals while managing weight. Avoid rapid cuts that leave you weak at practice or competition.

CutCoach can build a day-by-day plan for calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale, based on your weight, target class, and weigh-in date. Use it as a planning aid alongside your school’s official certification requirements.
