How weight classes work in Mississippi wrestling
Mississippi uses NFHS wrestling rules for the 2026-27 high school season. That means the boys follow the standard 14-class NFHS lineup, beginning at 106 pounds and ending at 285 pounds. MHSAA says NFHS rules govern wrestling for both boys and girls, but its handbook does not print a separate girls weight class set. Girls should confirm the actual classes for their competition with their coach. Do not choose a target based on a list from another state. MHSAA handbook
The next step is to match a class with your current weight, certification status, and school schedule.
Mississippi growth allowance and weigh-in rules
MHSAA does not publish a separate state weight-management supplement in its handbook. It also does not list a Mississippi-specific growth allowance date, an added weight amount, or a consecutive-day allowance. Because the state points to NFHS rules, ask your coach to confirm the meet’s official weigh-in instructions rather than guessing about extra pounds.
| Weigh-in topic | What is listed for Mississippi |
|---|---|
| State growth allowance schedule | Not specified |
| Consecutive-day allowance | Not specified |
| State hydration test limit | Not specified |
| Retest waiting period | Not specified |
Rule check: A missing state-specific number is not permission to make up your own limit. Get the correct figure and procedure from your school’s wrestling staff before you change a weight goal.
Weight certification in Mississippi
The MHSAA handbook uses National Federation rules but does not print a separate hydration cutoff, a hydration retest interval, or a last date for completing a descent plan. It does not identify a state-specific assessor or certification appointment deadline in its wrestling section. That makes your school’s instructions especially important.
The NFHS updated the minimum body fat floor for girls to 19% for 2026-27. Since MHSAA follows NFHS wrestling rules, ask how that update is being handled for girls at your school instead of working from an outdated figure. NFHS rules update
Talk through the assessment process while you are feeling well and training normally. Do not restrict water to try to change a hydration result. A reliable assessment is more useful than a misleading one.
Planning your season in Mississippi
Mississippi allows practice to begin October 12, 2026, and lists February 2, 2027, as the end of the season, with a maximum of 20 matches. Use those dates to plan for months of wrestling rather than focusing only on your opening meet. MHSAA handbook
Before practice starts, review your weight and a realistic class with your coach. Check the weight certification calculator to understand the questions you need answered. The descent plan calculator can help you map out gradual changes around competition days.
Keep enough food and fluids in your routine to support school, training, and recovery. If you feel weak or dizzy, tell an adult and stop trying to force the scale down. CutCoach can organize daily calories, water, meals, and post-weigh-in refueling around your weight, class, and weigh-in date. Your coach still needs to confirm your actual eligibility.
