How weight classes work in Pennsylvania wrestling

Pennsylvania high school wrestling uses 13 weight classes for boys and 13 for girls in 2026-27. The PIAA sets these classes for varsity and junior varsity, using its own lineup instead of the 14-class NFHS model. Boys compete from 107 to 285 lb, while girls compete from 100 to 235 lb, according to the PIAA handbook

That difference matters when you plan your season. Do not use a national weight class chart without checking the Pennsylvania list. A class available in another state may not be offered in PIAA competition.

Your certified minimum wrestling weight (MWW) also limits your choices. You can compete at your approved minimum class or the next higher class, as long as you meet your descent plan requirements.

Pennsylvania growth allowance and weigh-in rules

The PIAA records do not establish a specific seasonal growth allowance date or amount for 2026-27. Ask your coach which allowances apply before you plan around an adjusted weight limit.

The previous season’s weight control manual described a consecutive-day allowance of 1 lb per day, up to 2 lb total, and made clear that this allowance cannot speed up your descent plan. These details come from the 2025-26 PIAA Weight Control Program Manual, not a verified 2026-27 manual.

Keep consecutive-day allowances separate from your certified minimum. An allowance may affect the weight you can make at a particular event, but it does not automatically change your approved descent schedule.

Rule check: Have your coach confirm the current season’s consecutive-day and growth allowance instructions before tournament week.

Weight certification in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania uses its own Weight Control Program. Your minimum wrestling weight must be certified by an Authorized Medical Examiner (AME), not simply chosen based on the class you want.

The 2026-27 assessment window runs from October 23 through November 30, 2026, with OPC schedule entry due November 30; OPC remains open through January 15 for late high school joiners, and senior high wrestlers must establish their MWW by February 17, 2027. The program uses body fat floors of 7% for boys and 19% for girls, with AME consent required below those floors, and permits one appeal using Bod Pod or hydrostatic weighing only. See the PIAA Weight Control Program rules

The older manual also specifies a hydration limit of 1.025, a 24-hour retest wait and refractometer testing rather than strips. Confirm these procedures with your school for the current season.

Planning your season in Pennsylvania

Start with your actual assessment results, not your goal class. Use the weight certification calculator to estimate your minimum before discussing your options with your coach.

Next, enter your certification date and target class in the descent plan calculator. Compare its projected schedule with your official OPC information.

If you join late, contact your coach promptly about the remaining assessment process. Do not assume late entry gives you permission to rush your weight loss.

Safety: Eat regular meals, stay hydrated and give yourself enough time to recover between practices. If reaching a class requires extreme changes, discuss a higher class instead.

CutCoach can build a day-by-day plan for calories, water, meals and refueling after the scale using your weight, weight class and weigh-in date.
