How weight classes work in Hawaii wrestling

Hawaii high school wrestling uses 14 boys weight classes and 14 girls weight classes under HHSAA / HIADA. The standing HHSAA handbook lists the standard NFHS divisions, with boys classes ranging from 106 to 285 pounds and girls classes from 100 to 235 pounds. These are the classes shown in the tables above. HHSAA

There is a detail worth knowing for the 2026-27 season. Hawaii’s updated Weight Monitoring Program does not include a weight class list. Its examples refer to 108 and 114 pounds, but those examples do not establish a new official class set. The standing handbook remains the available reference for the divisions.

If your team gives you a different class list, ask your coach to confirm which divisions apply to your competition before setting a target weight.

Hawaii growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Hawaii has an unusual growth allowance rule. The allowance begins on the first Sunday in January, which falls on January 3, 2027. It adds 2 pounds to the weight class limits. Unlike many states, Hawaii also allows you to use that allowance when certifying for a lower weight class. HHSAA Weight Monitoring Program

SituationWhat it means for you
Before January 3Plan around the regular class limit
January 3 onwardThe 2-pound growth allowance applies
Certifying a lower classHawaii permits using the growth allowance
Consecutive-day competitionNo separate allowance is listed in the monitoring guide

That certification exception matters. Your target class should reflect when you plan to compete, not just the number printed on the weight class chart.

The monitoring guide does not specify a separate consecutive-day allowance or detailed multiple weigh-in rules. Ask your coach what procedures your tournament will follow.

Weight certification in Hawaii

Hawaii requires a hydration test as part of its weight monitoring process. The maximum urine specific gravity, or USG, is 1.025. A reading of exactly 1.000 also counts as passing.

If you fail the hydration test, you may retest on another date. The guide does not give an exact waiting period in hours. Hydration retesting stops after the third failed test.

For body composition testing, Hawaii permits skinfold measurements or Tanita equipment. The Bod Pod is not allowed. The state uses USA Bracketing rather than TrackWrestling OPC for its monitoring process. HHSAA Weight Monitoring Program

The guide does not establish a specific body fat minimum or a final descent-plan date. Do not assume a deadline from another state’s rules.

Safety: Do not restrict water to manipulate your hydration test. Arrive normally hydrated, and discuss any failed test with your coach before scheduling another assessment.

Planning your season in Hawaii

Start with your official assessment results. Your lowest permitted weight and your preferred wrestling class are not necessarily the same thing.

Use the weight certification calculator to explore a possible minimum weight. Then use the descent plan calculator to organize your target around the season.

Keep these Hawaii-specific details in mind:

  • Confirm your actual competition divisions with your coach.
  • Account for the January growth allowance when choosing a target.
  • Leave room for hydration retesting if needed.
  • Check your official USA Bracketing information before competing.

Avoid planning around the lowest possible number. Choose a class where you can train, recover, eat properly, and perform well.

CutCoach can also build a day by day plan for calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale using your weight, class, and weigh-in date.

Rule check: Your coach should confirm the applicable class list and any tournament weigh-in allowances not described in the monitoring guide.
