How weight classes work in Florida wrestling

Florida high school wrestling follows FHSAA rules for the 2026-27 season. Boys and girls each compete across 14 weight classes.

The boys’ divisions range from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls’ divisions begin at 100 pounds and extend to 235 pounds, with classes such as 105, 110, 115, 125, and 130.

Both sets match the standard NFHS class structures.

The FHSAA 2026-27 Wrestling Sport Manual explains the minimum-weight process and the rules that matter when moving toward a lower division.

Florida has some details that are easy to miss, especially its strict hydration cutoff and how growth allowance interacts with postseason eligibility.

Florida growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Florida’s growth allowance takes effect on or after December 26.

However, you cannot use growth allowance to establish a lower certified minimum at districts. You must make the scratch weight for your class at least once before districts.

That creates a key difference between being allowed a higher weigh-in limit and proving eligibility for a lower class.

The manual references consecutive-day allowances, including their application to the 285-pound boys’ and 235-pound girls’ classes. It does not provide a specific pound amount in the text.

Rule check: Ask your coach whether you have satisfied the scratch-weight requirement before depending on an adjusted class limit.

Weight certification in Florida

Florida’s hydration requirement is stricter at the cutoff than a rule that permits an exact reading of 1.025.

Your urine specific gravity must be less than 1.025. A reading exactly equal to 1.025 does not pass.

If you fail the hydration assessment, you must wait at least 48 hours before retesting.

Florida lists minimum body-fat values of 7% for boys and 12% for girls in its 2026-27 manual. Do not replace Florida’s published girls’ figure with the newer NFHS 19% figure when interpreting the state document.

Florida also has a certification rounding provision: a certified weight within less than 1 pound of a class can count as that class.

The deadline to establish your certified minimum wrestling weight is the Wednesday after the District Tournament, identified as Wednesday of Week 35.

These details can affect your class choice even when your everyday weight seems close to the limit.

Planning your season in Florida

Plan backward from districts, not just from the final postseason event.

If you expect to use a lower class, make sure your approved minimum and the scratch-weight requirement are both satisfied. Do not assume that weighing under an adjusted allowance establishes eligibility.

A useful approach is to:

  • Complete hydration and body-fat assessment early enough to address problems.
  • Review your approved minimum class.
  • Ask how the rounding provision applies to your certification.
  • Plan to make scratch weight before districts.
  • Check the Wednesday-after-districts deadline with your coach.

The weight certification calculator can help estimate minimum weight. The descent plan calculator can help you plan gradual changes before postseason competition.

Safety: Hydrate normally before certification and weigh-ins. Restricting water to change your scale reading can undermine both your health and your performance.
