How weight classes work in Washington wrestling

Washington high school wrestling uses the NFHS 14-class system for boys and girls. The boys classes run from 106 through 285 lb, and the girls classes run from 100 through 235 lb. The WIAA includes both lists in its Wrestling Weight Management Program approved September 28, 2026

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) also controls how wrestlers become eligible for a class.

That means your preferred weight is not necessarily your approved weight. You need to complete the assessment process and follow your descent plan before entering a lower class.

Washington has several details worth checking carefully, especially its hydration retesting policy and its treatment of growth allowances.

Washington growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Washington adds a 2 lb growth allowance beginning January 1, but this adjustment is not factored into the regular-season descent plan. The program also provides a 1 lb consecutive-day allowance specifically for postseason qualifying tournaments.

These are separate provisions. Do not treat a postseason allowance as though it applies to every regular-season event.

Postseason qualifying consecutive-day allowance1 lb

A practical way to plan is to treat your approved descent schedule as the starting point. After that, ask your coach which event-specific allowances apply.

Rule check: The published consecutive-day provision is tied to postseason qualifying tournaments. Confirm your event’s status before using it.

Weight certification in Washington

Washington’s hydration process has an unusual advantage for athletes who do not pass their first check. The WIAA permits hydration re-evaluation at any time rather than imposing a fixed retest waiting period.

The program requires a digital refractometer and a urine specific gravity reading of 1.025 or less; a failed hydration test does not count as a completed assessment. It also lists body fat floors of 7% for boys and 19% for girls, with a provision allowing a lower class when the wrestler is within 2% of that class, as described in the WIAA program

Do not mistake the flexible hydration retesting rule for a reason to change your water intake dramatically. Your goal is to arrive normally hydrated and ready for an accurate assessment.

The published program does not state a specific descent plan end date. Your coach should confirm any relevant school or tournament deadlines.

Planning your season in Washington

Get your assessment completed before making a firm commitment to a lower class. Use the weight certification calculator to estimate where your minimum might fall.

Then enter your certification date and goal class into the descent plan calculator. Focus on the schedule before considering any allowance.

Because Washington keeps its seasonal growth adjustment outside the regular descent calculation, you should not manually add that allowance to your projected progress.

Safety: If you fail hydration, return to normal drinking and follow the school’s instructions. Avoid dehydrating yourself to chase a particular number.

Keep your eating and training routine steady enough to support performance, not just the next weigh-in.
