How weight classes work in Maine wrestling

Maine high school wrestling is governed by the MPA. The available class information distinguishes between boys competition, girls wrestling against boys, and girls competing in girls divisions.

The boys class list follows the standard 14 NFHS divisions, from 106 to 285 pounds. Girls wrestling against boys use that same class structure. Girls competing against girls have a separate 12-class set, ranging from 100 to 235 pounds.

The boys divisions appear in the MPA weight management handbook. The handbook does not separately list the girls divisions, so the girls class information comes from the association class list rather than the weight management text. MPA Weight Management Handbook

The posted handbook is dated September 20, 2024. The handbooks we checked do not establish a verified 2026-27 revision of its weight management rules.

Check the correct class chart with your coach before choosing a target.

Maine growth allowance and weigh-in rules

Maine uses a split growth allowance instead of giving the full allowance at once.

The handbook assigns 1 pound in mid-December and another 1 pound in mid-January. It does not give exact calendar dates for either addition.

Alpha weigh-in after January allowanceAlpha weight becomes official

That final condition matters if you complete your initial assessment later in the season.

Do not assume you can add earlier allowances to a newly recorded alpha weight. Ask your coach how the official weight is being applied.

The handbook does not describe a separate consecutive-day weigh-in allowance. Tournament-specific weigh-in questions should go through your coach.

Weight certification in Maine

The MPA handbook sets the maximum hydration test reading at 1.025 USG. If you fail, the listed retest waiting period is 48 hours.

The handbook also caps weekly weight loss at 1.5% of the alpha weight. MPA Weight Management Handbook

There is an important difference between the older handbook and the newer national rules.

The handbook lists minimum body fat levels of 7% for boys and 12% for girls. However, the NFHS changed the girls minimum to 19% for 2026-27. That newer requirement applies where the updated NFHS standard governs certification. NFHS

Because the posted Maine handbook predates that change, confirm the applicable girls certification standard with your coach.

The handbooks we checked do not establish a current assessment deadline or descent-plan end date.

Safety: Do not restrict water to pass a hydration test. Maintain normal hydration and use the required retest process if needed.

Planning your season in Maine

Maine’s split allowance makes timing especially important.

Start with your actual alpha weight and official minimum. Then check whether your planned competition happens before or after each allowance period.

Use the weight certification calculator for an initial estimate and the descent plan calculator to organize gradual weight changes.

Before committing to a class:

  • Confirm whether the boys or girls competition divisions apply.
  • Check your assessment results and approved minimum.
  • Ask when the December and January allowances take effect.
  • Verify the current girls body fat rule.
  • Leave enough time for any required hydration retest.

Choose a target that supports normal meals, practice energy, and recovery.

CutCoach can build a day by day plan covering calories, water, meals, and refueling after the scale using your weight, class, and weigh-in date.

Rule check: Use your coach’s current MPA instructions when older handbook language conflicts with updated national rules.
